Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas wrote on Facebook that search teams detected an explosive device on the Lithuania drone and bomb-disposal experts neutralized it. The Associated Press reported the statement. The Guardian's live report time-stamped the update at 15:32 CEST and said the device was found during the crash-site search.

Earlier in the day, officials had offered preliminary and conflicting assessments about whether the wreckage contained explosives. Kaunas's later statement replaces that uncertainty with a reported finding from the recovery operation. It supports describing the Lithuania drone as carrying an explosive device, but the public account does not identify the device's type, size, condition or intended use. No inspected technical report explains whether it remained attached to the aircraft after interception.

How the Lithuania drone was intercepted

Lithuania's National Crisis Management Center said the aircraft entered Lithuanian airspace from the direction of Belarus. It remained over Lithuania for about 30 minutes and flew near the outskirts of populated areas before it was intercepted, according to AP's account. Italian fighters operating from Šiauliai as part of NATO's Baltic mission downed it near Pratkūnai, close to the Kaunas Reservoir.

LRT reported that Lithuanian radar detected an object approaching from Belarus before midnight and that residents later received alerts. Authorities recovered the Lithuania drone wreckage after the interception and secured the area for military and police examination.

The interception establishes that NATO aircraft used force against an unidentified drone over a member state's territory. It also shows why payload and attribution are separate questions. Finding an explosive device raises the potential consequences of the airspace violation, while technical evidence is still needed to connect the aircraft to an operator, mission or target.

What remains unknown about the Lithuania drone

The Lithuania drone came from the direction of Belarusian airspace, but that route does not prove it was launched from Belarus or controlled by Belarusian authorities. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said it most probably came from Russia, while Lithuanian officials said examination of the debris was needed to determine its origin. Those remain attributed assessments rather than a publicly documented forensic conclusion.

Investigators have not publicly identified the drone's model, serial numbers, control system or flight programming. They have also not established whether the aircraft was deliberately aimed at Lithuania, diverted from another route, affected by electronic interference or lost for another reason. The presence of explosives makes those questions more urgent, but it does not answer them.

The wreckage fell near a pumped-storage hydroelectric plant, according to Kaunas, but proximity alone does not establish an intended target. No inspected source attributes a target selection to the operator. It would therefore be premature to describe the Lithuania drone as an attempted attack on the plant, a reconnaissance mission or a deliberate test of NATO defenses.

Why the Danish helicopter incident is separate

Denmark reported a different military encounter in the Baltic Sea on Sept. 14. The Danish Defense Command said a Russian frigate fired two flares toward a Danish Fennec helicopter during routine photographic coverage in international waters off Gedser. One flare passed close to the helicopter, according to the Danish statement.

Russia disputed Denmark's framing and accused Danish helicopters of dangerous maneuvers near Russian warships. The Danish and Russian statements establish the two governments' competing accounts, not a shared account of responsibility or intent. The available evidence does not directly connect that encounter to the Lithuania drone, so they should not be presented as parts of one operation.

What comes next for the investigation

NATO aircraft have patrolled Baltic airspace since Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined the alliance in 2004.
